MorphOS port by Papiosaur, 2026.
Descent (Parallax Software, 1995) running on MorphOS through the D1X-Rebirth
engine. This build is based on SDL2 (sdl2.library / sdl2_mixer.library) and
adds game-controller support. It requires sdl2.library and sdl2_mixer.library
to be installed on your system.
Game data
---------
This archive ships with the SHAREWARE data files of Descent (7 levels), which
Parallax released for free, non-commercial distribution. They are complete
and playable as they are.
To play the full 27-level game, replace data/descent.hog and data/descent.pig
with the ones from a retail copy of Descent (CD, GOG or Steam release). The
file names are the same and nothing else has to be changed.
Installation
------------
Copy this whole drawer wherever you like on your disk, for example:

The game is built with SHAREPATH=PROGDIR:, so it finds its data files inside
its own drawer. Do not separate the binary from its data files.

Double-click "D1X-Rebirth", or from the Shell:

Music
-----
The game's built-in music is MIDI. It is rendered by SDL2_mixer using the
free "freepats" instrument patches bundled in the timidity/ drawer, so music
works out of the box with no extra installation. Removing that drawer only
makes the music silent; sound effects and gameplay are unaffected.
Controller
----------
With SDL2 the game uses the standard game-controller interface. Sticks and
pads are auto-detected; a phantom device on the empty analog port is filtered
out automatically, so -nojoystick is no longer required.
Force feedback (rumble) is supported and kicks in when your ship takes
damage. It needs a pad whose rumble motors are exposed to MorphOS through
sensors.library - a Xbox 360 controller is known to qualify. Pads without
motors, or whose motors the system does not see, simply stay quiet; nothing
else changes. Note that sdl2.library ships with a dummy haptic subsystem, so
the rumble goes through the joystick driver, not through SDL_Haptic.

Files created while playing
---------------------------
The game writes its configuration and saves (descent.cfg, player.plr,
player.plx, saved games, gamelog.txt) into the data/ drawer, and a log of its
console output into log.txt, so make sure it lives on a writable volume.
